Grapefruit Gin Fizz

·

If I were to choose a liquor to drink for a year straight, it would be gin. I would choose gin over vodka any day of the week. I like the herbal flavors and aromas that come from Gin, and it does not make me feel nauseous or overly hungover when I drink a cocktail with gin. I will also say, that this drink does call for a splash of vodka, but that's because it's just a splash, and it's a flavored vodka. I think the main reason why vodka and I don't get along is because it reminds me of my college sorority days, and I'll just leave it at that. Let's dive into this absolutely refreshing grapefruit gin fizz cocktail.

What is a gin fizz cocktail?

The term gin fizz was born in a bar in the 1880s. A man named Henry C. Ramos invented the cocktail, which eventually was renamed the New Orleans Fizz. You can read more about the origin of the gin fizz here. This version of a fizz is inspired by the use of gin in the cocktail, but with a grapefruit and elderflower flare.

What ingredients are needed for a grapefruit gin cocktail?

The beauty of making cocktails is that they don't need to be overly complicated. This gin fizz calls for:

  • 1oz grapefruit juice
  • 1oz Gin
  • Splash St. Germain
  • 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
  • Splash of Fresca or club soda

These ingredients are easy to find at any grocery store or liquor store. A great cocktail doesn't need a ton of bells and whistles, as long as it tastes good and the flavors are balanced, its a win!

Which brand of gin works best?

I am not a huge stickler when it comes to gin, but I will say that sometimes the label or brand of the alcohol does make a difference. Here's a few brands I'd recommend:

  • Bombay Sapphire
  • Empress Gin
  • Isolation Proof - they're local in NY!
  • Hendricks
  • Mr. Hobbs Gin

How do you make this grapefruit gin fizz?

Let's get down to business and make this deliciously refreshing cocktail. In a large shaker, add ice cubes and pour in the grapefruit juice, gin, St. Germain, and lemon juice. Squeeze in the half of lemon juice and close the shaker. Shake vigorously and pour into a coupe or high ball glass with ice. Top it off with club soda or Fresca.
