There's nothing quite like biting into a ripe peach, embracing all of the juices that stream down your fingers and wrists after that very first bite. Peaches are truly the stone fruit of summer, and I am here for it! One of the greatest things about eating peaches is that they are so beautifully sweet and satisfying, which makes them perfect for a summer peach crisp.

Peach Crisp

The best thing about making a crisp is that it requires not many ingredients. Peaches, in particular, pack such sweetness and delicious flavor that there is no need to overcomplicate with any additional sugars or sweeteners. They are great as is! This peach crisp is easy to prep, easy to bake, and it's pretty easy to eat the entire thing in one sitting. Just warning you!

What is a crisp?

Creating a fruit crisp has become an American and British tradition, typically beginning in the fall. A crisp is very quick to put together, a crisp typically boasts a crumble-like topping with oats, whereas a crumble omits the oats and relies on the sugar, flour, and butter to create a streusel. So, technically this is a crumble, as I did not include any oats here...but, tomato, tomAHto. You can ready all about crisps, crumbles, and more here.

Ingredients:

For this peach crisp/crumble, you'll likely have everything you need in your pantry, but be sure to buy those Oregold Peaches at peak ripeness, not too soft, and slices really well!

  • Peaches: the star of the show! Sweet, juicy, and completely perfect for this crisp. We don't add any extra flavoring or sugar to the fruit because when the fruit bakes, we want to preserve the natural sweetness without overcomplicating with added sugar.
  • Butter: Butter will help bind the dry ingredients in the crumble topping.
  • Light Brown Sugar: The addition of light brown sugar adds a slight molasses taste and gives the crumble an added flavor.
  • Cane Sugar: Of course, sugar is needed to make the crumble a little sweet.
  • Cinnamon: Adding a touch of cinnamon to the crumble gives the needed spice to round out the flavor.
  • Flour: The flour will help the crumble form pebbles when added on top of the peaches.

Directions:

There are two sets of directions when making this peach crisp: creating the crisp/crumble, and the assembly of the dish itself:

For the crisp:

  1. Melt the butter in a microwave safe dish and set aside.
  2. Add the flour, sugars, and cinnamon to a medium sized bowl and pour in the butter. Using a spatula, mix the ingredients together until it starts to form small pebble-sized pieces.
  3. Set the crisp in the fridge for at least 15-20 minutes.

For the assembly:

  1. Slice the peaches thin and place into an oven-safe baking dish.
  2. Take out the streusel mixture and coat the entire top of the peaches with the crumb mixture.
  3. Place the dish into the oven and bake at 350º for 25 minutes.
  4. Take out and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips:

  1. Be sure to let the crisp/crumble set in the fridge so that the ingredients come together to form the crumbly texture
  2. Add in different spices to the crumble like clove or nutmeg if you desire
  3. Add in some nectarines or pears to the peaches to make a fall festive crisp.
